It’s been 7 weeks now with Fischer, and I wanted to share all the things we’ve needed so far. Some of these things we got at our baby shower, some I bought before baby arrived, and some I bought after he was here as we discovered more things we needed. There are just so many baby products out there, so I hope this is helpful!
Dockatot. At first I wasn’t sure of it’s real use, since in the US they claim babies shouldn’t sleep in it. But we do put Fischer down for naps in it, and he sometimes sleeps in it at night as well when we travel and when he’s being extra fussy so we can access him easily. I’ve never once been nervous of anything happening and it feels really safe to me. It’s just a great resting spot because we put the dockatot on the couch, on the kitchen counter when we cook dinner, etc. And it’s easily moveable so you can take it with you all over the house or on trips.
Portable sound machine. We have the ROHM portable sound machine and use it often. We mainly use this in the car or in his stroller.
Shusher. We first didn’t think we needed this since we had the ROHM, but quickly learned babies love the “shushing” sound so we got this too. We also learned you can never have TOO many sound machines haha, since it’s good to keep one in the car, in your diaper bag, in the house, etc.
Como Tomo bottles (we have 4). We are breastfeeding and occasionally pumping, and these bottles are great!
A good diaper bag. The one we got I wound up not liking. It’s not comfortable to wear and it doesn’t have enough compartments. Ask around for recommendations or go to a store where you can see them in person first.
A LOT of burp cloths and bibs. We have burp cloths by our bed, some in his room, some in the living room and kitchen, some in the car, some in the diaper bag, one laying in his dockatot, one laying in his swing… you get the picture. You can see how they adds up fast and you need a lot haha.
Pacifiers. We keep one in the diaper bag, one in the car, and the rest in the house. I bought a few brands and so far the fav is Bibs. They are really light weight so they stay in his mouth easily. He also likes the Natursutten brand. I also bought pacifier clips to connect the pacifier to so when he spits it out, it doesn’t fall on the floor or get lost.
A 2 in 1 carseat cover/nursing cover. We have the leaf print Covered Goods cover and love it. We use it to cover his carseat if we take him places to keep him sleeping and to keep strangers from getting too close. And we use it when I need to nurse in public, as it doubles as a nursing cover.
A swing. We got the 4Moms Mamaroo and he loves it. A lot of the swings aren’t meant for infants, but this one is and he fits in it perfectly. Its movements are less swing like and more real motions of things like the car for example. Fischer loves the car and being bounced, so I think that’s why he likes it so much. We found a really good deal on it on Facebook Marketplace.
Velcro swaddles. Swaddle blankets are great for keeping baby warm as a regular blanket, but they can break free from those too easily. With their crazy arms and feet, you need one that can be secured a lot better. We have the grey Ollie swaddle and after a few times using it, you get the hang of it. He sleeps in the Ollie at night and naps in it sometimes during the day too.
Zipping pajamas. I bought a few from Old Navy and got gifted a few too from Cotton On, and they are amazing. Zippers are much easier than snaps and quicker. Your baby will mainly be in onesies and pj’s for a while, so get a good amount of both.
If you’re getting the Boon Grass drying rack for bottles, get the large size. We got the small one thinking that’d be enough room, but it wasn’t. Luckily I found a second small one at a thrift store, so now we have enough space for all the bottles.
A lot of diapers and wipes! They go fast haha. We chose the Honest brand. I love how everything is scent free. I can’t stay the typical smell of diapers of wipes that a lot of the other brands smell like. He also hasn’t had a blow out once in these!
A good and easy to use carseat and stroller. We chose the green color of the Uppababy Vista stroller and Mesa carseat combo. It’s great because the carseat can attach right onto the stroller base. It also comes with a bassinet attachment which is perfect for long walks or outings so he’s not stuffed into his carseat for too long. The stroller can also transition to a 2 kid stroller which will be perfect for the future! The stroller also folds easily and fairly flat. Lastly, the bassinet attachment is perfect for traveling when sleeping away from home, because baby can sleep in there safely at night. I found a good deal on this on EBay!
GATHRE mat. We use it for on the go diaper changes but mainly for tummy time! It’s easy to clean off which is great since he usually drools or spits up while doing tummy time haha.
Fisher Price play mat. I HATE how it looks haha but I know colors are important to young babies. Just in the last 2 weeks he started staring at more things, moving his arms a little more intentionally, and responding to noises so this is perfect for him.
Nose Frieda. We use this a lot to get his boogers (gross, I know). When we notice his nose sounding stuffy, we use this to clear it out. It’s super useful and easy!
Bath items. We love the Little Unicorn hooded towels because they are really thick and cozy. For in the bath, we use the the Angelcare Baby Bath. It’s great for putting in your bath tub and the water comes through the holes so the baby is sitting in the warm water but supported in a slanted position.
